Keeping Fine Art Fine - How to Properly Store Paintings

The Jack Rabbit Team | February 14, 2020 @ 12:00 AM

While there may be some disagreement as to what is considered fine art, the need to keep it in good shape while in storage is widely known. Don’t just carelessly handle it and prop it against the wall in a corner. Many factors can cause degradation of that precious painting passed down through the generations of your family, but the main cause – YOU. Yes, you. So, follow these steps to help keep that painting a good as new.

  • Minimize contact. Remember, your skin holds oils and dirt, so always try to avoid touching the canvas whenever possible. Keep food and beverages away from the painting at all times.
  • Protect it. While storing, use plastic wrap to protect the finish and keep it clean.
  • Pack it with care. Using a custom-sized Styrofoam box can ensure the painting stays secure and snug in the box. Fill any empty space in the box with bubble wrap.
  • Store vertically. This will avoid something being stacked on top of the painting and possibly warping or crushing it. Don’t store it directly on the ground or propped against a wall.
  • Choose a climate-controlled unit. Do not store the painting in a traditional storage unit. Climate control offers both temperature and moisture stability. This will help prevent mold and deformation. When not in a storage unit, don’t store it in a basement or attic.
  • Avoid direct sunlight. Prior to, during, and after storing, your painting should be placed where direct sunlight cannot touch it. Sunlight will bleach out colors. If it is unavoidable, use a special UV protection glass in your frame to keep the colors fresh and bold.

Now that you know how to properly store your painting, Jack Rabbit Storage can help by providing climate-controlled units that are clean and secure. Stop by your local Jack Rabbit today!
